Danseuses Viennoises

Quick Reference

Viennese-based troupe of small girls, which toured Europe and the US (1845–8) under the direction of Josephine Weiss. They were very popular, appealing to a public taste for diminutive dancers which had previously been gratified by troupes like the one appearing in the Horschelt Vienna Children's Ballet. This latter ensemble performed in Vienna between 1815 and 1817 and nurtured several stars possibly including Elssler though she denied any connection with it. Weiss's company was finally closed down due to moral objections.

Subjects: Dance.
