Quick Reference

Dasheen is another name given, particularly in the Caribbean, to a cultivated variety of the taro, a tropical plant with very large starchy edible tubers. It is not recorded until as recently as 1899, and its origins are not altogether clear, but it has been speculated that it comes from French de Chine ‘from China’ (taro seems to have come to the West from China, although it probably originated in northern India).
