A satellite programme of the European Space Agency, the aim of which is to offer new communications services to Europe and to demonstrate and test in orbit new satellite technologies, including an optical intersatellite data-relay link and the use of ion engine propulsion to correct a satellite's position whilst in geostationary orbit. The first satellite in this mission, Artemis, was launched in 2001.
