Belgian mathematician now working in the United States. Daubechies was educated at the Free U, Brussels, where she studied physics, gaining her doctorate in 1980 and joining the staff in 1984. She has developed an international reputation for her work on wavelets. In 1987 she moved to AT&T Bell Laboratories in the United States. In 1991 she became Professor of Mathematics at Rutgers U, moving to her present post at Princeton U in 1993. She was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1998.
