Puritan. He was vicar of a London church and then co-pastor of the English church in Amsterdam. He sailed for Boston in 1637 and in 1638 founded the colony of New Haven; here Church membership was obligatory for electors and civil officers. In 1662 he became involved in a controversy over Baptism, connected with the Half-Way Covenant.
