Quick Reference

The name given to a series of small submarines, built by the Confederate States Navy during the American Civil War (1861–5). They were more submersibles than true submarines, were driven by steam propulsion, and carried a spar torpedo over their bows. The steam ‘Davids’ were not designed to dive fully, but were trimmed down so they proceeded awash. One attacked a Federal ship during the American Civil War (1861–5). Its spar torpedo did not explode deeply enough to do any significant damage, and the waves set up by the explosion swamped and sank it.
