(1890–1958), Indiana born journalist, author, and news analyst, and director of the Office of War Information (1942–45). While with The New York Times (1914–24) he wrote its History (1921). His books include novels and stories; Show Window (1927) and Not To Mention the War (1940), essays; But We Were Born Free (1954), on civil liberties; and Two Minutes Till Midnight (1955), on nuclear weapons and peace.
