Welsh composer and organist. Taught counterpoint RCM 1895–1903. Org., Temple Church, London, 1898–1918. Cond. Bach Choir 1903–7. Mus. dir. RAF 1917 (comp. its march). Prof. of mus., Univ. of Wales 1919–26. Org., St George's Chapel, Windsor, 1927–32. One of first popular broadcasters on mus., serving in advisory capacity at BBC 1927–39. Apart from RAF march, best‐known comps. are Solemn Melody, org., str. (1908) and hymn God be in my head. Comps. incl. cantatas The Temple (1902) and Everyman (1904), sym. (1911), church mus., and songs. Master of the King's Musick 1934–41. OBE 1919. Knighted 1922. KCVO 1937.
