John Dawson was born near Sedbergh in Yorkshire and died at Sedbergh on 19 September 1820. He was the author of an anonymously published tract entitled The Doctrine of Philosophical Necessity briefly invalidated (1781). The doctrine to be invalidated was that in Joseph Priestley's Doctrine of Philosophical Necessity Illustrated (1777).
