(1895–1973), maritime painter. Contrary to the popular myth that he was born at sea, Montague Dawson was born in Chiswick, West London, in 1895, the son of an engineer, inventor, and expert Thames yachtsman, and the grandson of Henry Dawson, a successful landscape painter. Montague Dawson's own artistic talent was evident from childhood, and he had a lifelong fascination for the sea and ships, together with a seaman's practicality.
