Welsh poet, born in Rhymney, Monmouthshire, who worked as a collier before training as a teacher at Loughborough College. His poems were published in three main collections, Gwalia Deserta (1938), The Angry Summer (1943), and Tonypandy and Other Poems (1945); his Selected Poems appeared in 1953. Almost all his work is passionately concerned with the plight of the industrial valleys of south Wales during the inter‐war years, in particular the crisis of the General Strike of 1926.
