The annual Jewish fast day designed to cleanse the people from sin and to re-establish good relations between God and His chosen ones. Much of the ritual ordered in the OT has necessarily lapsed, but the day is still widely observed by Jews with fasting and prayer. Its Hebrew name is ‘Yom Kippur’.
