Eng. music scholar and writer. Son of Basil Dean, theatrical director. Authority and author of books on Bizet, Handel, and other composers. His Handel's Dramatic Oratorios and Masques (1959) and Handel's Operas 1704–26 (1987) are major works of scholarship. Has prepared several Handel edns. His Essays on Opera was pubd. 1990. Prof. of mus., Univ. of Calif., Berkeley, 1964–5.
