Dutch-born physical chemist who worked on a number of topics. He introduced the idea of electric dipole moments in molecules and, in 1923, working with Erich Hückel, he published the Debye-Hückel theory of electrolytes. Debye was awarded the 1936 Nobel Prize for chemistry.
