The twelfth month of the year, in the northern hemisphere usually considered the first month of winter. The name is recorded from Middle English, and comes from Latin, from decem ‘ten’, being originally the tenth month of the Roman year.

Decembrists a group of Russian revolutionaries who in December 1825 led an unsuccessful revolt against Tsar Nicholas I. The leaders were executed and later came to be regarded as martyrs by the Left.
