The influential modernist ideal of phototographing the most telling instant in a significant event, at the same time giving ‘proper expression’ to the ‘precise organization of forms’: i.e. with attention to artistic composition. The term is that of the French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908–2004). Commonly interpreted by photojournalists simply as the capture of a dramatic climax.
