The tax concession available in many countries including the US by which certain contributions to charities can be deducted from gross income to arrive at taxable income. The argument for these concessions is that through them the state can encourage donations to worthy causes, by lowering the net cost to individual donors, while decentralizing the decision as to what causes should be supported.
