Under the 1982 United Nations Law of the Sea Treaty, this is defined as being the ocean floor and its subsoil beyond the limits of national jurisdiction. Thus, it constitutes that area beneath the oceans that does not come within any of the coastal zones. The resources within such an area are the common heritage of mankind. Under the Treaty an organization nominated the International Seabed Authority will control deep seabed mining in the area.
