Quick Reference

Many software systems can be configured to behave in slightly different ways. For example, a browser can be configured to reject any applets which are contained in a Web page. The configuration of the software is adjusted by means of a number of settings which the user can easily access. When a program is in default mode its settings match those that were initialized when it left the software developer's premises. It is also used in a non-technical sense to describe someone who has not developed in his or her life: for example, ‘John is a sad case. He is still in default mode.’
