Products of the deg-1, mec-4 and mec-10 genes in Caenorhabditis elegans which have homology with amiloride-sensitive sodium channels. Mutations cause neuronal degeneration, probably by disrupting ion fluxes. A related protein, the product of unc-105, interacts with collagen and may be a stretch-activated channel. Mammalian homologues (BNAC1 and -2) are amiloride-sensitive brain-specific sodium channels similar to, but distinct from, the epithelial amiloride-sensitive channels.
