(1912 –76), was born in Manchester and educated at Shrewsbury School (for whose 400th anniversary he wrote a masque) and at Brasenose College, Oxford. From 1936 to 1963 he wrote film criticism for the London newspapers, except during the war years, when he was with the Special Operations Executive. He later wrote scripts for films, among them The Spy Who Came in from the Cold.
