(1920– ).

German architect. He did much to re-establish Modernism in Germany after the 1939–45 war, and strove for informality, notably with his Municipal Theatre, Münster (1952–6). His subsequent work included hospitals, cultural buildings, and many office-blocks. His Spielbank Building, Dortmund-Hohensyburg (1981), is a good example of his crisp, hard style.
