A procedure in which a person speaks into a microphone attached to a tape recorder, and the speech is played back to the speaker through headphones after a brief delay. With a delay of about 200 milliseconds (one-fifth of a second), the effect on most speakers is a severe disruption of speech, with stuttering, slurring, and often complete inability to produce intelligible words.
