A word often used by law enforcement officials to describe antisocial adolescent behavior ranging from vandalism to violent crime. Delinquency has a public health dimension because of the risks of substance abuse, sexually transmitted disease, the coexistence of mental and emotional disorders, etc. Often it can be prevented, and successful intervention is possible for common precursor situations, such as parental alcohol and drug abuse and domestic violence.
