Pennsylvaniaborn novelist, after education at West Virginia State College for Negroes and Fisk University was long an expatriate in Rome, writing for Italian films. His first novel, Beetlecreek (1950), depicts evil in the relations between blacks and whites in a West Virginia town. The Catacombs (1965) is a novel about a novelist in Rome named William Demby caught up in the immoralities and crises of the times. Love Story Black (1978) and Blueboy (1980) are shorter novels.
