Quick Reference

Of Croton in southern Italy (6th cent. bc), one of the most famous doctors (see medicine) of his time, and origin of Croton's medical reputation, practised in Aegina, Athens, and then for Polycrates 1 of Samos. After the murder of Polycrates c.522, he won great repute at Darius I's court, but the picturesque Herodotean story of his escape back to Croton, and marriage to the daughter of Milon the wrestler, looks like a folk‐tale.
