A method of assessing family status and health conditions in low- and middle-income nations by questionnaire or interview survey of representative samples of households, focusing on variables relating to reproductive health, infant and child illness and death, use of immunizations, dietary supplements, and other pertinent information about health and access to and use of health care services. Typically, the data are derived from a representative sample of at least several thousand and obtained by means of standardized interview schedules.
