A tropical and subtropical virus infection transmitted by Culex mosquitoes, such as Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, with symptoms of high fever and severe muscle pains (thus the name breakbone fever). The hemorrhagic variety is very serious, resembling yellow fever. Dengue is not transmissible directly from person to person but only via mosquito bites. It is endemic in many tropical regions, in urban as well as rural communities. There is no specific treatment, but the disease usually runs its course and confers a type-specific immunity.
