US writer and critic. He studied at Harvard University, in Vienna, and at Hellerau-Laxenburg, and during the 1930s danced with the Darmstadt company. He was then appointed dance critic of Modern Music (1936–42) and the New York Herald Tribune (1942–5). He also contributed to many dance magazines. His reviews were collected together in two volumes: Looking at Dance (London, 1944 and New York, 1949) and Dancers, Buildings and People in the Streets (New York, 1965), and in the collected edition Dance Writings, ed. Cornfield and Mackay (London, 1986 and New York, 1987).
