Jesuit missionary. He set out for India in 1603. Observing the influence of the Brahmins in Hindu society, he adopted the penitent life-style of a Brahmin Sanyasi. His strategy was criticized, but once his methods were approved by Pope Gregory XV in 1623, he was able to work successfully in S. India.
