density estimation

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

The process of estimating the population probability density function from a sample of observations. The question is how best to estimate the function. One standard method is to build up the estimate by assigning a rectangular unit area to each observation: this leads to the histogram. A more sophisticated approach uses kernel methods.
