Dentists Act

Quick Reference

An act of parliament first introduced in 1878 to regulate the dental profession in the UK by introducing voluntary registration of dentists with the General Medical Council. A new act was passed in 1921 which made it mandatory for newly qualified dentists to register with the Dental Board of the UK. The Dentists Act 1956 established the General Dental Council, which replaced the Dental Board. The Dentists Act 1984, together with the Dental Auxiliaries Regulations 1986, provided for the enrolment and regulation of dental therapists and dental hygienists. The Dentists Act 1984 (Amendment) Order 2005 introduced compulsory indemnity cover and allowed the General Dental Council to regulate the whole dental team, including dental nurses and dental technicians, and to take action in cases of poor professional performance.
