Department for Children, Schools, and Families

Quick Reference

Created in June 2007, and responsible for education in schools and the work of children's services. It succeeded the Department for Education and Skills, but took over only part of its remit, the responsibility for higher education and skills training going to another newly created department, the Department for Innovation, Universities, and Skills. The linking of responsibilities for matters relating to children's health and child poverty to those for education in schools signalled a more coordinated approach to social provision for children in line with the aims expressed in the document Every Child Matters.

Subjects: Education.
