Uranium residue from which radioactive components have been wholly or mostly excluded during the use of this metallic element in the nuclear industry. Depleted uranium is used in weapons, for instance, in armor-piercing shells. There is equivocal anecdotal and epidemiological evidence that exposure of combat troops and noncombatants to depleted uranium has adverse effects on health, including increased risk of malignant disease.
