Belgian dancer, teacher, and director. He trained at the Strasbourg Ballet with Jean Combes and at the Studio Wacker with Nora Kiss and Victor Gsovsky, making his debut with the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas in 1961. He was a soloist with Béjart's Ballet of the 20th Century (1963–73), after which he was soloist with National Ballet of Canada. In 1977 he went to New York to study, and between 1977 and 1979 was teacher and assistant director of Béjart's company. In 1979 he established his own studio in New York and until 1987 also worked as guest teacher with many companies, including New York City Ballet and Paris Opera. Between 1987 and 2005 he was artistic director of the Royal Ballet of Flanders where he not only added many full-length ballets to the repertoire but also focused on new commissions from, among others, Mauricio Wainrot and resident choreographer Danny Rousseel. In 1999 he married the company's principal ballerina, Aysem Sunal.
