Quick Reference

One who makes an oral or written statement (deposition) on oath in a court of law. It was usual in civil cases in the 16th and 17th centuries for both sides to present supporting statements of this sort, often in the form of answers to leading questions. The records of quasi‐judicial inquiries under special commissions initiated by the Exchequer are kept at The National Archives in E 133, 134, and 178.
