Natural or synthetic compounds composed of amino- and hydroxy-carboxylic acid residues (usually α-amino and α-hydroxy acids). In many cases, although not all, the two types alternate and in cyclodepsipeptides, the residues are connected in a ring. Cyclic depsipeptides are common metabolic products of microorganisms, often with antibiotic activity (e.g. actinomycin; enniatins; valinomycin).
