Quick Reference

The glycosaminoglycan composed of repeating units of d-glucuronic acid-N-acetyl-d-galactosamine or l-iduronic acid-N-acetyl-d-galactosamine that is found in the extracellular matrix of skin, blood vessels, and heart. There are one or two sulphates per unit and the overall size varies from 15 to 40 kDa. Accumulates in Hurler's syndrome and Hunter's syndrome where there is a defect in l-iduronidase.
