A monospecific family (Dermatemys mawi) of turtles in which the shell is smooth and fully ossified. Tabasco turtles are nocturnal, bottom-dwelling animals that seldom emerge from the water. Eggs are laid on the river bank. These turtles are herbivorous on water plants. The Tabasco turtle is found in coastal rivers of Mexico and Guatemala (Tabasco is a state of south-east Mexico).
