French mathematician and engineer whose work on conics and the result known as Desargues's Theorem were to become the basis of the subject known as projective geometry. His 1639 book was largely ignored, partly because of the obscurity of the language. It was nearly 200 years later that projective geometry developed and the beauty and importance of his ideas were recognized.
