A systematic review of the archaeological resources within a defined geographical area based on researches of extant records, accounts, publications, aerial photographs, archives, gazetteers, maps, listings, and other relevant sources. Second stage in the management cycle. Such studies do not usually involve fieldwork over and above a walk‐over survey of the study area, and are typically undertaken to assist in the identification of archaeological potential and the specification of a field evaluation.
