Character in the Yoknapatawpha saga of Faulkner. After service in the Confederate cavalry, he becomes the sheriff who, in Absalom, Absalom!, kills Wash Jones after Jones has murdered Thomas Sutpen. Some of Sutpen's land becomes his, and to it he annually invites hunting parties as described in “The Bear.” In The Hamlet his barn is burned, presumably by Ab and Flem Snopes. His son Manfred, a West Point graduate and veteran of the Spanish-American War, becomes mayor of Jefferson and president of the Sartoris Bank. In The Mansion, when Will Varner discovers that Eula Varner Snopes, his daughter, is De Spain's mistress, Manfred has to sell his bank stock to Eula's husband Flem and to leave Jefferson.
