Ballet in one act with choreography by Tharp, music by the Beach Boys, and design by New York graffiti artists. Premiered 1 Mar. 1973 by City Center Joffrey Ballet with Tharp and her dancers. This was Tharp's first work for a classical company and was a literal bringing together of dance worlds, featuring Tharp's own modern dancers as well as the classical dancers of the Joffrey Ballet. At its centre a classical soloist performs academic steps, in alphabetical order, while around her the other dancers execute much freer, pop-inflected dances. The revised version Deuce Coupe II for Joffrey dancers only and with new design by James Rosenquist was premiered 1975.
