British publisher founded in 1951 by André Deutsch, following his departure from Allan Wingate. His business partner and editor was Diana Athill; his list included John Updike, Norman Mailer, and Jean Rhys. In the 1970s, Time-Life briefly owned the company. Deutsch regained control, but sold a majority share to Tom Rosenthal in 1984. In the early 21st century, André Deutsch has been a Carlton Books imprint.
