A low‐income country with an economy that is largely based on agriculture, which may be going through the demographic transition, is often in the process of industrialization, and usually has few resources to spare to solve its own socio‐economic and environmental problems. Most developing countries are in the southern hemisphere. Also known as a less developed country or a Third World country. Compare developed country, transitional nation.
