Son of a maternal uncle of the Buddha.who had been converted by the Buddha himself. After years in which he had become a respected member of the Saṃgha.Devadatta is said to have started a series of plots including three attempted murders, in order to take control of the Saṃgha from the Buddha. Devadatta confronted the Buddha over a number of ascetic practices (dhutanga) which he sought to have made compulsory, but which the Buddha decided should be optional. The enmity between the two was not limited to this life, but each of Devadatta's efforts to overthrow the Buddha resulted in failure.
