(1780–1849),

German theologian. His radical rationalism led to his being deprived of his professorship at Berlin; from 1822 he was professor at Basle. Latterly he became more conservative and emphasized the importance of religious experience, but his doubts about the biblical miracles and his reduction of the stories of the Birth, Resurrection, and Ascension of Christ to myths offended the Pietists.

Subjects: Christianity.
