In the Mahābhārata the name of the blind Kuru king who, although disqualified by his infirmity, has to take the throne after the death of his brother, Pāṇḍu. Husband of Gāndhārī, and father of the Kauravas, Dhṛtarāṣṭra reluctantly presides over the events leading to the war with his brother's sons, the Pāṇḍavas. In a passage that includes the Bhagavadgītā, his driver, Saṃjaya, relates the course of the battle to him. Dhṛtarāṣṭra was born blind as a result of his mother, Ambikā, closing her eyes during intercourse with his father, Kṛṣṇa Dvaipāyana Vyāsa. See also Mahābhārata.
