Quick Reference

The banner on which the emblem of a hero, or the mount of a deity, is represented. (Arjuna is described in the Mahābhārata as kapi-dhvaja, ‘ape-bannered’.) It is counted as one of the ‘eight auspicious objects’ (aṣṭamaṅgalas). In temples—especially Śaiva temples—the banner may be mounted on a flag pole, or dhvaja-sthambha, opposite the entrance to the main shrine.
