Glycerol with long chain fatty acyl residues substituted on the 1 and 2 hydroxyl groups. DAG is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of phosphatidyl phospholipids. DAG released by phospholipase C activity from phosphatidylinositol polyphosphates, acts as a second messenger and activates protein kinase C by stabilizing its catalytically active complex with membrane-bound phosphatidylserine and calcium.
